Ministerial-level Scientific Research Base
The Key Laboratory of Display Materials and Optoelectronic Devices (Ministry of Education)
Date : 2025-12-24

The Key Laboratory of Display Materials and Optoelectronic Devices (Ministry of Education) is anchored in the discipline of “Materials Science and Engineering”, founded by Academician Xu Xurong, a pioneer in the field of luminescence. It is a top-tier and first-class construction discipline in Tianjin. The affiliated “Materials Science and Engineering” discipline boasts a first-level doctoral program and postdoctoral research station, as well as the “Ministry of Education International Joint Laboratory for Material Microstructure”, the “Tianjin Key Laboratory of Optoelectronic Display Materials and Devices”, the “Tianjin Key Laboratory of Advanced Porous Functional Materials”, and the “Tianjin Key Laboratory of Functional Crystal Materials”.

The laboratory currently has a fixed staff of 56, including Wu Yicheng (Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering), multiple recipients of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars and the National Science Fund for Excellent Young Scholars, as well as national-level talents such as those awarded the National Hundred, Thousand, and Ten Thousand Talents Program and the National Ten Thousand Talents Program.

The laboratory adheres to application-oriented basic research as its primary focus, actively promoting the leapfrog development of fundamental scientific research and interdisciplinary applied basic research. It emphasizes the complementary strengths of science and engineering disciplines and the transformation of scientific research achievements, forming four research directions.

1. The “Organic Optoelectronic Materials and Devices” direction focuses on material design, synthesis, and device assembly at the molecular or microscale level, providing theoretical and technical support for the application of novel optoelectronic devices. It involves the research and development of new small-molecule and polymer fluorescent probes, exploring their applications in biochemical detection and biomedical imaging.

2. The “Molecular-based and Porous Metal Photoelectrocatalytic Materials” direction focuses on the design, synthesis, and controlled preparation of high-efficiency, low-cost photocatalysts and electrocatalysts, such as molecular-based catalysts, graphdiyne, and MOF-supported catalysts. It also investigates the applications of nanoporous metals and carbon-based materials in fuel cells, secondary batteries, metal-air batteries, supercapacitors, photoelectrocatalysis, and gas separation.

3. The “Inorganic Semiconductor Materials and Optoelectronic Devices” direction focuses on next-generation optoelectronic devices, driven by critical nanomaterials and technologies. It explores novel preparation methods, techniques, and processes for semiconductor nanomaterials, aiming to design and develop devices with innovative optoelectronic and sensing properties.

4. The “Functional Crystal Materials and Optoelectronic Properties” direction focuses on fundamental materials for high-tech fields such as optoelectronics, microelectronics, communications, and aerospace, including functional crystals like BBO, LBO, and KBBF. It conducts research on large-size nonlinear optical materials with deep ultraviolet, ultraviolet, visible, and mid-to-long infrared wavelength ranges, featuring high nonlinear coefficients and large birefringence, while developing novel wavelength laser materials and laser devices.

The laboratory consistently adheres to the disciplinary development philosophy of “serving regional economies, strengthening industry-academia collaboration, and pursuing distinctive development”, conducting research to meet the needs of Tianjin’s pillar industries in new materials, new energy, and electronic and optoelectronic information. Over the past five years, the laboratory has published 685 SCI papers in related research fields, including 145 papers in the first tier and above, such as Science, Nature Communications, and Advanced Materials. Its research achievements have garnered widespread attention from international peers, with multiple results selected as cover and back cover color illustrations by authoritative journals. The laboratory has won one Tianjin Natural Science Award (First Prize), one Tianjin Science and Technology Progress Award (Second Prize), and one award in the first National Postdoctoral Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition. Additionally, it has filed 347 national invention patents, with 73 patents granted.

The laboratory focuses on the integration of industry, academia, and research, aligning with national strategies and the socio-economic development of the region. It collaborates with multiple enterprises, such as the 18th Research Institute of China Electronics Technology Group Corporation, Tianjin Lishen Battery Co., Ltd., Shandong Shengyang Power Supply Co., Ltd., and Tianjin Bamo Technology Co., Ltd., to tackle technological challenges. Notable achievements include the development of novel lithium-ion cathode materials with a strong emphasis on technology commercialization, green recycling and resource recovery of spent power lithium-ion batteries, as well as underwater cross-pipe sealing materials and system integration for deep-sea oil extraction, delivering significant benefits to these enterprises.

The laboratory has established close scientific research collaborations and talent cultivation partnerships with over 20 universities and research institutions, including the Department of Materials Science at the University of Wollongong in Australia, Pennsylvania State University in the United States, the Department of Materials Science and Engineering the University of Tennessee, and Mons University in Belgium. It has secured two international cooperation projects and jointly trained five postgraduate students with external institutions.
