Since the 14th Five-year Plan, the university has been actively promoting its strategy of strengthening through scientific research, with the goal of comprehensively improving the quality, openness, and integration of talent cultivation, scientific research, and social services. The university’s scientific and technological innovation has been continuously enhanced, as is demonstrated by its high-level scientific research achievements. The research funds have been doubled, with a momentum of witnessing a four-fold growth. The national-level scientific research platform has been approved, and the university is striding forward towards the goal of becoming a high-level teaching and research-oriented university of science and technology.

The basic scientific research of the university has significantly improved, with its influence at home and abroad continuously increasing. The disciplines of Chemistry, Materials Science, Engineering, and Computer Science have entered the top 1% of ESI global rankings, and in terms of Nature Index, it ranks 68th nationwide in the Nature Index. In 2020, the university won the talent project of the Young Talents Support Program from the China Association for Science and Technology for the first time. In 2021, it received its first support from the National Excellent Young Scientists Fund, which was newly established by the National Natural Science Foundation of China. In 2024, it won the title of Tianjin Outstanding Talent for the first time. Since 2021, the university has been approved for 579 projects, including the National Key Research and Development Program, the National Natural Science Foundation of China, and the National Social Science Foundation of China, forming four hundred million-yuan scientific research project groups. The annual research funds have increased from 94 million in 2019 to 301 million in 2024, a 3.2-fold increase. In 2022 and 2023, in terms of scientific and technological funds, the university ranked first and second respectively among municipal universities in Tianjin. High-level theoretical innovation achievements have been continuously increasing. Since 2021, the university has won 41 awards at or above the provincial and ministerial level. The number of international first-class papers published has increased from 86 in 2019 to 220 in 2024, a 2.6-fold increase. Researchers have published 6 papers in top international journals such as Nature and Science.
