The Tianjin University of Technology Robot and Intelligent System Science Popularization Base regards science popularization activities as an important support for enhancing social service capabilities, and is fully committed to building a model of a large, medium and small integrated science popularization base featuring “one core, two platforms, three dimensions, four integrations and five modules”. The base lies in closely aligning with the national science and technology education development strategy layout, and further promoting the construction of the two platforms, i.e., the “education, cultivation, extension, and expansion” integrated exhibition hall and the digital virtual simulation. The base is committed to shaping a science popularization brand that integrates “theoretical instruction, practical operation, and ideological and political education” for coordinated development, highlighting the unique feature of combining “knowledge dissemination, ability enhancement, quality cultivation, and spiritual fortification”. The base is dedicated to creating a captivating science popularization activity system covering “visiting and practicing, lectures and discussions, internships and training, science and technology competitions, and exhibitions and publicity”, aiming to achieve comprehensive, systematic, and innovative development of science popularization education and enhance the scientific and cultural literacy and innovation awareness of the entire population.
The base adheres to the service tenet of “popularizing scientific knowledge, spreading scientific ideas, and advocating scientific methods”, taking scientific and technological innovation and ideological and political education as the key points, and focusing on the lectures on cutting-edge technologies such as robot principles, artificial intelligence, advanced manufacturing, and life health. The base uses the practice education that combines virtual and real elements as a means to comprehensively promote science popularization work that meets the needs of scientific and technological frontiers and people's high-quality life. The base advocates the spirit of scientists who “fear no difficulties and strive for the peak”, and enhance the scientific and cultural literacy and innovation awareness of the entire population. In the past three years, the base has adhered to the combination of “welcoming in and going out”, and has visited more than 10 schools such as Shui Shang Primary School and Jingwen High School to conduct nearly 30 science popularization lectures. We have also continuously carried out science and technology popularization volunteer services at the Tianjin Science and Technology Museum for many years, with an average of over 2,000 people covered by science and technology popularization each year. For two consecutive years, nearly 150 people have served as volunteers for the special services of the Asia-Pacific Robot World Cup Tianjin International Invitational Tournament, receiving unanimous praise from the organizing committee.
The base has formed a science and technology popularization education service system with diversified channels and hierarchical contents by assembling a team of science and technology guidance and science popularization interpretation composed of professional teachers, ideological and political counselors, laboratory technicians, and college students engaged in scientific and technological innovation. The base has 86 science and technology popularization experts, among whom 42 hold senior professional titles, and nearly 90% have doctoral degrees. The base has over 60 laboratories including those for robots, intelligent manufacturing, and mechanical and electrical control, as well as more than 1900 sets of advanced instruments and equipment/software. The base has carried out a large number of student scientific and technological innovation activities in areas such as “smart agriculture”, “intelligent manufacturing”, “intelligent security”, and “smart healthcare”, winning multiple science and technology popularization innovation awards. The works formed have become important contents and equipment for science popularization lectures and training, vividly demonstrating the promoting role of robot and intelligent system-related technologies in production and life, and effectively improving the quality of science and technology popularization activities.
In the future, the base will closely align with the strategic positioning of our city as a “national advanced manufacturing research and development base”, firmly grasp the two key points of scientific and technological innovation and ideological and political education, increase investment in hardware such as digital twin and machine learning platforms and various robot systems, improve the management and opening system of the science and technology popularization base, and further expand the scale and improve the quality of science and technology popularization activities. The base offers a variety of science and technology popularization activities including enterprise-university exchange and discussion on science and technology popularization, interesting experiments on robot building and control, robot innovation design competitions, vocational skills training in digital technology, artificial intelligence technology entering communities and rural areas, theme lectures on future technology and advanced manufacturing, and robots and intelligent technology entering schools. Based on information technologies such as digital virtual simulation, we will create a scene-based, experience-based, and immersive science popularization atmosphere to help the public understand cutting-edge technology knowledge, cultivate the spirit of scientists in the new era, foster scientific thinking and critical spirit, and inspire the public's spirit of scientific exploration.
